A recent study by the Institute of German Economy (IW) on behalf of the Bertelsmann Foundation reveals a significant increase in the demand for workers in the solar industry in Germany. In 2022, there were 52,000 online job advertisements for positions in the solar sector, more than double the number in 2019. In the first six months of the current year, 36,000 job ads for the solar industry were already posted, indicating a record-breaking year.

In high demand are professionals such as plumbing, heating and air conditioning technicians, as well as construction electricians. Roofers are also increasingly sought after for the installation of solar panels. However, the rising demand in the solar industry may lead to shortages, as the already limited skilled workforce is being actively recruited.

The study authors emphasize that the success of the energy transition depends on an adequate supply of qualified professionals. Therefore, it is crucial to make jobs in the renewable energy sector more widely known and attractive.

The demand for workers has also increased in the wind energy sector, though less dynamically compared to the solar industry. Experts attribute this to the more complex planning and construction requirements of wind turbines. According to the European umbrella organization Solar Power Europe, there is also a significant demand for additional skilled workers in the solar industry across Europe, with Germany having the highest demand. By 2027, it is projected that 1.2 million "full-time equivalents" could be created in this sector.
