Dear Colleagues,
To prevent misunderstandings and unnecessary stress, we would like to clearly explain the process for your medical recognition in Germany. There is a common rumor that you apply for recognition immediately upon reaching the B2 level. This is not how it works.
Here are the three most important facts you need to know for your planning:
1. No Immediate Application at B2 Level
If you completed your medical studies in an EU country, your degree is generally recognized automatically in Germany (EU conformity). However, we do not apply for your final recognition (Approbation) the moment you receive your B2 certificate. The B2 certificate is merely a stepping stone, not the final step of the process.
2. Language Acquisition and Recognition Run Separately
Acquiring the specialized C1 language level for medical professionals is an independent process. It runs completely separate from the bureaucratic applications. You do not need to worry about time pressure: you still have plenty of time to bring your German up to the required level while your documents are being processed in the background.
3. The True Function of B2 and C1 (The Path to the Approbation)
The language certificates serve specific, fixed purposes in the German system:
The B2 Certificate: This is your entry ticket. You need it solely to register for the Medical German Exam (Fachsprachprüfung - FSP) at the relevant Medical Chamber (Ärztekammer).
The Medical German Exam (FSP): This exam tests your medical German at a C1 level.
The Approbation: Only after you pass this Fachsprachprüfung (FSP) will you receive your German license to practice medicine (Approbation) and be allowed to work fully as a doctor in Germany.
Overview of the Timeline:
Learn German up to the general B2 level.
Register for the Medical German Exam (FSP) using your B2 certificate.
In parallel: Continue learning German up to the C1 Medical level.
Pass the FSP exam → Receive your Approbation.
You have sufficient time for each of these steps. Focus on your language skills step by step – this is the most reliable path to your success.
